How Der Bruce Began – A Journey into Lost Places

The beginning  „Der Bruce“

In late 2018, I decided to reshape my passion for Lost Places and adventure. After dealing with constant conflicts in a Lost-Place group, I made the decision to start my own project. I wanted to create something that was not dependent on others but bore my own signature. And so “Der Bruce” was born – a project that has accompanied me ever since and has become an essential part of my life.

First Steps and Challenges

In early 2019, “Der Bruce” went live with the first website and a YouTube channel. I was full of energy and excitement, but soon realized how much work each step would take. My videos and content had to be not only spectacular but well-researched and well thought out. The more I immersed myself in the work, the more I realized that finding balance was difficult. The website and video production took much more time than I expected.

A Setback and New Beginnings

The worldwide COVID-19 crisis hit in 2020, and I lost my job. During this difficult time, I found strength in the fire department, which offered me a new perspective and stability. However, my marriage also faced major challenges. I moved with my ex-wife to the vicinity of Trier, even though our relationship was already on the rocks. The move and the changes that came with it were not easy. But despite these challenges, I found comfort in my passion for the fire department and nature. My project “Der Bruce” also gave me strength and helped me get through this difficult time. It became an anchor point that kept me going even when everything else seemed to fall apart.

A Year of Change

At the end of 2021, I moved with my wife to the vicinity of Trier. But the move to a new home never felt quite right to me. Amid this new environment and the changes that came with it, I suffered another setback: a slipped disc that temporarily halted my life and plans. But even during this tough time, something positive came out of it: I found comfort in the fire department and nature. I learned to focus on the essentials and slowly began rebuilding.

A New Beginning

After the herniated disc, I started to get back up. In 2022, I met my current girlfriend and moved in with her. The adjustment wasn’t easy, but it gave me stability. I found my place in a new fire station and didn’t give up. Over the course of the year, I began to feel stronger both physically and emotionally. I took on more responsibility and continued to build “Der Bruce,” knowing that this project was important for my well-being.

Physical Challenges and Achievements

2023 was a year that tested me both physically and mentally. I had surgery on my cervical spine shortly before my birthday and received an implant. Six weeks later, I completed the firefighter’s breathing apparatus test, which I was really proud of. My volunteer work as an equipment manager for the fire department and a part-time job as a caretaker gave me the strength to keep growing. But 2023 was also filled with challenges when I had to undergo psychosomatic rehab to recover from mental stress.

A Major Accident and the Return to My Project

In August 2024, I had a serious work accident, falling through a rotting wooden floor and suffering a spinal contusion. It was a major blow, but also a wake-up call: “Der Bruce” gives me strength, and I want to continue it no matter what. My girlfriend and I, both dealing with health issues, support each other, and this support helps me move forward. 2024 also marked the beginning of my trauma therapy and a deep reflection on what truly matters. Nature and my projects have carried me through this challenging time.

Our Team – Meet the People Behind Der Bruce

Der Bruce – Lost Places Explorer and Adventurer

Bruce

Founder

I’m Bruce. Outside in nature, I find peace, adventure, and my true passion. The fire department is an essential part of my life, and my training as a First Responder and Equipment Manager shows how seriously I take my responsibilities. “Der Bruce” gives me strength; it’s more than just a hobby – it’s my mission to inspire people to go outside, explore the world, and connect with nature. Despite my ADHD and PTSD, I keep fighting, flying my dragon, and never giving up. “Der Bruce” is my way of showing people that there’s always a glimmer of hope.

Svenja

The Muse

Svenja is not just my girlfriend; she’s the soul of calm and care. She lovingly takes care of Ginger and Emilio, especially when they’re not feeling well, and is always there for them. Despite the challenges she’s faced with burnout and her own health, she supports me with all her heart. Her passion for nature, animals, and our joint project “Der Bruce” motivates us both to discover the world outside and keep going, no matter what comes our way.

Emilio – Loyal Adventure Companion of Der Bruce

Emilio

The Adventure Companion

I’m Emilio, Bruce’s loyal companion. I love being out with him, discovering Lost Places, and simply enjoying nature. I especially love the fire department – the vehicles, the gear, and the view from the turntable ladder! But it saddens me when people destroy these places. I don’t understand why that happens because when nature lets something decay, it’s okay, but human destruction endangers all of us. I’m not just an adventurer; I’m also the soul soother, helping Bruce during tough times. Together, we experience every adventure, and I’m proud to be part of “Der Bruce.”

Ginger

The Loyal Soul

I’m Ginger, an Italian Greyhound, and I love exploring nature with my nose. Although I haven’t been to any Lost Places yet, I’m looking forward to discovering them with Svenja, Emilio, and “Der Bruce.” I’ve found my place in the fire station’s vehicle hall and know when it’s time to step back.

I’m a bit reserved around strangers, but I feel safe with Svenja and my human. When they’re not feeling well, I take care of them and make sure they feel better.
